This 2011 expansion project saw the addition of a lap pool, recreational therapy pool, two ice rinks, a gymnasium and two multi-purpose rooms. The expansion includes renovations to a concession area. The centre opened in 2003 and originally featured two ice pads, gymnastics complex, outdoor beach volleyball courts, banquet hall, multi-purpose room, meeting rooms, concession operation, pro shop, and administrative space.
The 136,000 square-foot total expansion was divided into two phases. The first phase included construction of two new ice pads and seating (one of which has a seating capacity of 500 people), a double gymnasium, an elevated indoor walking/jogging track and multi-purpose spaces. Phase 2 of the expansion included construction of a leisure pool and eight-lane competition pool.
The second phase didn’t qualify for funding and therefore was not required to meet the March 2011 deadline, but was phased in as part of building the expansion; the pools opened in November 2011.
The expanded facility includes leading-edge technology to maximize energy efficiency through a geothermal heat recovery system.
